The bottom line mission for the Girl Scouts is: "Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place". That's our mission too. Our mission here in the Sandy River Neighborhood Unit is to be the best leaders we can be to help your girls meet that goal: To grow strong and be the best that they can be.

Description:
Girl Scouts of Maine Council provides programs for more than 10,000 girls between the ages of 5 and 17 in southern, central and western Maine. Sandy River is one of 27 Neighborhood Units within the Maine Council system that helps these programs reach the girls throughout Franklin county, and parts of Androscoggin (Livermore/Livermore Falls)and Kennebec(Vienna & Fayette) counties. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives.

History:
The first local Girl Scout meeting was organized by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low and held in Savannah, Georgia, on March 12, 1912. She believed that all girls should be given the opportunity to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. With the goal of bringing girls out into community service and the open air, Girl Scouts hiked, played basketball, went on camping trips, learned how to tell time by the stars, and studied first aid. Today, Girl Scouts of the USA has a membership of nearly four million girls and adults.
