History:
The Leisure Center for the Handicapped(now the Center for Therapeutic Recreation)began in 1974 as a cooperative venture between the University of Southern Maine and the City of Portland's Parks and Recreation Department. Initial funding for the center's services was made possible through a demonstration project grant from the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation. Its goal was to identify the recreation needs of individuals with disabilities living within the Greater Portland community.Within the first year of programming the center, the Leisure Center for the Handicapped served over 200 individuals with varying disabilities, suggesting that the need for social and recreation activities for individuals with special needs was significant. The Leisure Center remained a part of the City of Portland's Park and Recreation Department until January 4, 1985 when the center left city auspices and established its self as a private nonprofit organization. In September 1992, the official name of the agency was changed from The Leisure Center for the Handicapped, Inc. to The Center for Therapeutic Recreation, Inc. to better reflect the agency's mission. From this modest beginning the program has grown into a model program which has provided therapeutic recreation and aquatic services over 4000 participants in Cumberland County.
