To seek out, recognize and develop leadership skills in youth. To encourage and assist students at critical times in their quest for self-identification. To create a network of civic minded students to return home and better their communities through volunteering.
Description:
Since 1980, Maine Youth Leadership (formerly affiliated with HOBY) has developed personal and group leadership skills beginning with high school sophomores. Primarily through a 4-day seminar, students learn and are inspire to make better choices, develop like-minded friends across the state and give back to their communities through volunteering. Many of the students sent to us speak up and get involved in their communities. This may be different and they don't know if it's "okay" to be involved. They meet other students who are like them and are reinforced to stay involved and to volunteer.
History:
We have been doing the seminar since 1980. Last year the seminar at the Univ. of Southern Maine campus in Gorham. 98 sophomores attended, 21 juniors and seniors plus 20 adults. We raised $22,000 in 2008 so far and solidly liquid with a substantial "rainy day fund". We have 16 Board members and no paid staff (so that all the money we raise goes to programs for kids and not administration. This also means that Board members take responsibility for leading or participating in planning the seminar, raising money, recruiting students to attend the seminar, communications/PR and the like.
