The mission of the Challenger Learning Center is to:
• Provide a challenging, interdisciplinary, relevant educational experience for the children of Maine,
• Raise student aspirations,
• Improve educational achievement in mathematics and the sciences, and
• Inspire interest in careers in science and technology.

Description:
Merging the power of a child's imagination with the thrill of discovery, students become engineers and scientists as they explore space. Students (g5-9) work as teams in mission control and aboard a space station and develop their decision-making, problem solving, and communication skills through an interactive learning experience. Teachers receive a full day of training to prepare their students to successfully accomplish learning objectives as they simulate a mission. The training includes curriculum materials, activities and assessment materials aligned with the Maine Learning Results.

History:
In 2001, a group of ten community leaders in Bangor, Maine came together with a grand idea -- to build a Challenger Learning Center in the State of Maine. Based on a proven educational model that has successfully engaged and educated children from around the globe, a Challenger Learning Center (CLC) provides a learning experience that makes math and science come alive for thousands of middle school students each year.
We have now flown over 450 simulations since our first mission on March 1, 2004, providing over 11,000 students (and 1200 teachers and chaperones) with a one-of-a-kind capstone educational experience-- without one significant mission failure. These simulations are supported with carefully designed pre-mission training for teachers; linking the experience to their ongoing classroom instruction and to national and state learning standards in mathematics, the sciences, language arts, and other disciplines. Student preparation for the mission experience is also included, and CLC staff work with each participating school to make sure the mission program is carefully matched to the interests and instructional readiness of each child.
