Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center's vision is to be a premier regional interpretive center featuring multi-disciplinary exhibits and programs of historical and cultural worth. Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center's mission is to enlighten and inspire the public by interpreting the life, culture, and heritage of the Red River Valley.
Description:
Home of the Hjemkomst Viking Ship, which was built by Robert Asp of Moorhead, and sailed to Norway in 1982. A thirty minute documentary film details construction and voyage of the ship. Also on display is the Hopperstad Stave Church Replica built by Guy Paulson of Fargo. The Center show a documentary film of the construction and provides guided tours of the church. At the lowest level of the center is the Red River Valley exhibit, which focuses on the settlement of the Red River Valley region. A 7,000 square foot temporary exhibit spaces provides space for three to four traveling and locally made exhibits a year.
History:
The Center was opened in 1986 as the home of the Viking Ship Hjemkomst. In 1998 the Stave Church Replica was dedicated. The Red River Valley open in 2001.
