The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.

Description:
The American Cancer Society is an agency that provides information about cancer, offers support, services and resources to cancer patients, and raises funds to fight cancer.
Dollars are used locally in and on behalf of your community to provide the following services and programs at no charge: Updated and professional information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via 1-800-ACS-2345 or our Website: www.cancer.org, Durable Medical Equipment, Support Groups, Children's Summer Camps, Reach to Recovery, Road to Recovery, Look Good Feel Better, Navigator Program, Tobacco Control and Advocacy Activities, Hope Lodge, National Cancer Survivor Network 1-877-333-HOPE (4673) or at www.cancer.org

History:
The American Cancer Society began in 1913, and has had the mission to eliminate cancer since that time. In 1946, we began funding research. From 1946 to present the American Cancer Society has funded 34 Nobel prize winners early in their careers. Dollars donated to American Cancer Society has helped to make the following advances possible: Diagnostic Tests-MRI's, CAT Scans, Ultrasounds, Mammograms, PSA Test (prostate specific Antigen, and PAP Smears. Treatment Advances: Bone Marrow Transplants, Interferon, Interleuken, Oncogenes and Tumor Supressor Genes, Tamoxifen, Monoclonal Antibodies and Herceptin to treat breast cancer, and Rituxan to treat lymphoma, Lumpectomy plus radiation for breast cancer, cure for childhood leukemia. Prevention: Cancer Prevention Studies I and II which identified the importance of a healthy diet and physical activity, as well as identifying smoking as a cause of lung cancer.
