The Giving + Learning Program offers opportunities to mentor new Americans (immigrants and refugees) to succeed.
Description:
The Giving + Learning Program is a grant-funded program that matches volunteers interested in mentoring new Americans in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Mentors may work under the direction of a teacher at an adult learning center such as Moorhead Adult Basic Education or Partners in Learning (a family literacy program) or they may work on their own with a new American in his/her home or in a public setting such as the library.
History:
The Giving + Learning Program was first funded in 2001 with a grant from Catholic Health Initiatives. It was initially funded as an opportunity for seniors in the community to mentor new Americans to help them succeed in the workplace. The program began with three mentors and has grown to over 480 volunteers helping over 600 new Americans in the community. We are now grant funded by the Otto Bremer Foundation as well as Catholic Health Initiatives. A network of local organizations have provided additional funding to keep our program active and functional.
