Our Vision:
Rooted in Faith, sustained by Hope, and guided by Charity, we will pursue our mission by:

  • Providing quality human services for people in need
  • Advocating for people who are poor and vulnerable
  • Promoting respect for human life and human dignity
  • Building healthy families and communities
  • Collaborating with people of good will.
An organized expression of the social ministry of the Catholic Church in the State of North Dakota, we provide services for people regardless or religion, race, age, gender or ability to pay.

Description:
Catholic Charities North Dakota provides adoption services, pregnancy counseling, guardianship services, information and referral, family and marriage counseling, special needs adoption and disaster assistance.

History:
Catholic Charities North Dakota is an arm of Catholic Charities USA. In 1923 Father Vincent Ryan, pastor of St. Anthony's Church of Fargo, saw the need for a planned approach to working with unmarried mothers and to locating adoptive parents. He solicited the voluntary services of Mrs. Kathyrn Wehlitz to begin working in 1924. Mrs Wehlitz was to be the first social worker of the Agency.
In 1926 the Catholic Welfare Bureau became incorporated as a non-profit corporation with the permission of Bishop Aloysius Muench.
In 1937, Father Anthony Peschel was sent to Notre Dame to become the first professionally trained social worker in the Agency and one of the first in the state. As years past the agency has had many directors to include Father Peschel, Father James Walsh, Father Charles Hughes and Father Gerald McCarthy. In 1977 Roger Schwinghammer was appointed director and was the first lay person to assume that position.
Catholic Charities has celebrated its 80 anniversary and has grown from an agency with only one service of infant adoption to an agency with special needs adoption, adult guardianship, counseling, pregnancy counseling and disaster assistance. It has also added offices in Grand Forks, Minot and Bismarck.
