Description:
The East Grand Forks Food Shelf is a non-profit agency that provides supplemental or emergency food once a month or more often if the need requires it until family is able to surpass family crisis. Every household receives food for 12 days according to the size of the family. Every household is required to show residency with a recent bill or letter from another service agency. Client must provide proof of members in household. The East Grand Forks Food Shelf does not require proof of family income and interviews are necessary only when a family is coming for assistance more than once a month.
History:
The East Grand Forks Food Shelf started in 1983 at the Sacred Heart Church Convent. The EGF Food Shelf was located in different building from 1990 until 1998 when the then Board of Directors did fund-raising within the local area churches, businesses and private donors, raising $8,600. The East Grand Forks Construction Class in the East Grand Forks Technical College did all of the construction. The City of East Grand Forks donated the property at 1715 3rd Avenue NW. The East Grand Forks Food Shelf started operating at this address in 1999 and has since been operating in this new building. The East Grand Forks Food Shelf operates with the help of grants, Church, school and local business contributions, and private donors.
