AFS-USA works towards a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.
Description:
AFS Intercultural Programs is a worldwide organization that has been leading the way in international exchange for more than 50 years. Local volunteers work with their communities and schools to facilitate exchange of high school students. AFS changes the world - one student at a time.
History:
AFS was founded by Stephen Galatti who served as an ambulance driver in World War I. He and a group of fellow ambulance drivers began coordinating the exchange of high school students between countries previously at war with one another. The first students to come to the US were from France and Germany. Since then, more than 50 nations participate in multi-lateral exchanges. In the Upper Midwest, more than 250 students are hosted and more than 100 students go abroad each year.
