Mission: Promoting inclusion, independence and self-determination through advocacy and education for people with developmental disabilities. We strive to provide services that help people with developmental disabilities live as independently as possible.
Description:
The Arc of Cass County provides services to people with developmental disabilities. The Arc provides the following services: Information and referral, education, individual advocacy, self-advocacy, systems advocacy and the Companionship Program. The Companionship Program is dedicated to forming one-to-one friendships between a volunteer from the community and a person with a developmental disability. The goal of the Companionship Program is to maintain a relationship with his/her companion while encouraging the emotional and social growth needed to develop future relationships. The Arc of Cass County is primarily funded through proceeds from The Arc Attic Treasures resale stores.
History:
The Arc of Cass County began as a group of concerned parents, teachers and friends of children with mental retardation in the early 1950's. Over the years, The Arc has been instrumental in gaining and retaining the rights of people with mental retardation in North Dakota. (We now use the term "developmental disabilities" instead of "mental retardation.")
