The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is sponsoring the Fight Back Express, a nationwide bus tour with the goal of building a grassroots movement united in its mission to make cancer a top national priority. Our message: “If one person can battle cancer, a nation can rise up and defeat it.” The effort represents the largest grassroots mobilization campaign ever waged on the issue of cancer.
Description:
Cancer Action Network: A Grassroots Movement • Frankly, our elected officials aren’t doing all they can. So it’s up to the citizens of this country – nearly every one of which has been touched by cancer -- to tell them to do more. • If one person can fight cancer, then an entire nation can rise up to defeat it. • Only a nationwide, grassroots movement -- organized, united and relentless in its mission -- can put cancer at the top of the nation’s agenda. The Need for ACS CAN • ACS CAN is that movement. A movement that will give ordinary people extraordinary power to fight back against cancer. • ACS CAN is a movement that unites and empowers cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and their families. •ACS CAN is a movement waging, and winning, campaigns to:
- secure more research dollars
- expand access to early detection, prevention, and treatment
- reduce suffering from tobacco by working for a smokefree nation
•ACS CAN is a movement educating the public, lawmakers, candidates, and the media.
There are more than 10.5 million cancer survivors in America today. If each one of them can battle cancer, then our nation can rise up to defeat it. We invite everyone who has been touched by cancer to join us in that effort, to become part of this movement, and become a member of ACS CAN today.
History:
The Cancer Threat • In 1971, America declared war on cancer. We have made a lot of progress since then, but science alone will not defeat cancer. • Our government is an essential partner in this fight, perhaps the most crucial ally we have. But lately it seems to be beating a hasty retreat, leaving hundreds of thousands to die in its wake. • More than 565,000 Americans will die of cancer in 2008 alone.
