MinnKota PAAWS/PAAWS Project is a low cost spay/neuter assistance program. Our mission is to reduce the number of unwanted litters of dogs and cats by helping people who might not otherwise be able to afford to spay or neuter their animals
Description:
MinnKota PAAWS operates a small spay/neuter clinic in Fargo. Surgeries are performed on Fridays and Saturdays by licensed veterinarians with pre-vet student assisting the vets and community volunteers working in the reception and recovery areas. Fargo clinic appointments are reserved for pets from low- and limited-income families, stray/feral cats, and/or barn cats. When callers do qualify for services at the PAAWS clinic or when the services requested are outside of our scope, PAAWS volunteers will make referrals to cooperating veterinarians in Fargo/Moorhead or the surrounding communities. MinnKota PAAWS is not a part of any regional or national organization. The clinic and sanctuary are supported by by grants, donations, and vaccination/ microchipping fees. We also have a small cat sanctuary where we socialize feral cats that our volunteers think could be adoptable. Periodically, we get calls from people who have found litters of kittens, with or without their mothers, and we have foster homes that care for the kittens, monitoring their development and socializing them for future adoption.
History:
The program was started in 2004 and has expanded several times since. Each year we have performed twice as many surgeries as the previous year. Our goal for 2007 was 900 surgeries and we surpassed that in September. We will complete close to 1500 surgeries by the end of December.
