History:
History of the Safe Communities Coalition of the Red River Valley The Red River Valley Safe Communities Coalition started out as the DUI Task Force in 1984. The mission of the DUI Task Force was to identify factors contributing to drinking and driving and to develop methods to counteract it. The DUI Task Force expanded its role to address the multi-faceted issues of traffic safety and became the Traffic Safety Task Force in 1990. The Traffic Safety Task Force played an important role in drafting and securing support for traffic safety legislation and educating the public on seat belt use and child passenger safety. The Task Force executed a multitude of projects to educate and encourage the attitude changes among drivers, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians towards safe life choices. In the summer of 2001, the Traffic Safety Task Force changed its name to Red River Valley Safe Communities Coalition and adopted the Safe Communities Concept. The goal of the Safe Communities Concept is to promote injury prevention activities at the local level to identify and address local injury problems using a “bottoms up” approach involving its citizens in addressing key injury problems.
