Our mission is to provide Latina(o) victims of domestic violence and sexual assault support and advocacy through bilingual advocates. We are committed to eliminating the personal violence that is prevalent in today's society. Through crisis intervention and advocacy we facilitate change within society's attitudes and behaviors.
Description:
In 1975 MHSI, recieved funding to provide access to primary health care to migrants and seasonal farm workers and their families. The primary heath care is provided through a variety of models including: seasonal health centers (nurse based); year round health centers, mobile health units; voucher referrals to primary care providers; contracting for extended hour clinics with local health providers, just to name a few, the clients we serve do not have health insurance, speak Spanish (English may be their second language), work long hours and do not have sick leave, live in poor housing situations, access to limited transportation, average family size is five; annual income is $ 7500.00 - well below federal poverty guidelines. In addition to primary health care services, MHSI provides advocacy to battered women and children who are victims/survivors of battering and or sexual violence; diabetes program; WIC services; case management, arranges for transportation and interpretation services.
History:
In 1989 MHSI recieved a grant from MN Department of Corrections (DOC) to provide crisis intervention and bilingual advocacy to Hispanic battered women and their children in the Red River Valley. The grant allowed us to employ two (2) full-time bilculture/bilingual advocates (one in Moorhead and one person in Crookston). These offices serve Clay, Wilken, Norman, Polk, Kittson, Marshall and Pennington counties. In 1994, MHSI received funding to employ one sexual assault bilingual/bicultural advocate to assist victims/survivors of sexual violence and their families. Out of our Crookston office. In 1997 MHSI received funding to employ a Violence Against Women Act advocate for our Moorhead office. Both offices offer the following services: All Services are confidential
- 24 Hour Crisis Line (staffed by bilingual on-call intervention volunteer advocates.

- Bilingual Advocates
- Transportation
- Information and Referral
- Supportive counseling and advocacy, Assistance in obtaning and Order of Protection/HO, Advocacy with law enforcement, legal, health care and financial systems.
